Tenofovir is phosphorylated by cellular kinases to the pharmacologically active metabolite Tenofovir Diphosphate. Tenofovir Diphosphate works to inhibit HBV replication through incorporation into viral DNA by the HBV reverse transcriptase, which results in DNA chain-termination.
