UsesAvodart (Dutasteride) is used to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate (a condition referred to by medical professionals as benign prostatic hyperplasia). This condition causes urination difficulties, such as a weak stream, frequent urination, and other problems related to the flow of urine. Taking this drug treats these symptoms by shrinking the prostate. It may also help to reduce the need for surgery.

Recently, many medical studies have taken place to determine the effectiveness of this drug in treating male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia). Many males affected by this condition take it for this purpose, as they believe that it can help with hair growth.

Dosage and AdministrationAdult male patients taking Avodart (Dutasteride) must strictly follow the dosage regimen prescribed by their physician. Treatment of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) usually requires a dosage of 0.5mg, taken once per day. This drug is sometimes given as a monotherapy, however, it is also possible that your physician will tell you to take it together with tamsulosin. If this is the case, you will be told how much tamsulosin you need to take. The dosage for treating baldness can vary, and you must seek medical advice for further information.

Side effectsPossible reactions which patients undergoing treatment with Avodart (Dutasteride) may experience include:

• Erectile dysfunction
• A noticeably reduced libido
• A decreased volume of semen released when ejaculating
• Body hair loss or growth of scalp hair
• Enlargement or tenderness of the breasts

Notify your physician if you are worried about any side effects. Severe side effects requiring medical attention are rare, but still possible. Immediate medical care is required if you notice peeling of the skin, lumps on the breasts, a discharge from the nipples or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.

PrecautionsThere is a slight possibility that taking this drug may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Ask your physician about all of the risks associated with treatment.

This drug is only for men, and should not be taken by women. Male patients taking this drug should not donate blood while undergoing treatment, and for a period of at least six months after finishing treatment, so as to ensure that blood which may contain traces of the drug is not given to a pregnant woman. Also, women who are pregnant should avoid handling these tablets, to ensure that none of the active ingredient is absorbed through the skin.
